Livin' Large
Pacifica, CA industrial designer Dirk Dieter has a tiny house. It’s 250 square feet. The process of renovating and making the place what he wants has even led to a side business selling the furniture he designed for his own “streamlined living.” Some of the principles that have gone into his redesign and renovation: Sliding doors or curtains instead of swinging doors Flexible...

Switch Users and Save Space With WinSwitch
Since Mac OS X 10.3 we have had Fast User Switching, the feature which allows more than one use to be logged in to their accounts on a Mac at the same time. In case you’re unfamiliar with the idea, imagine the following: you are busy writing something on your iMac and your wife comes in to the room to check her email. Instead of saving your work and logging out so she can log in to her account to...

There are many options, and selecting the best engine, you should know exactly what you’d like to have and which level of flexibility you’d like to achieve. Among dozens of options, Wordpress remains the most popular weblog engine out there. It is simple, powerful, extensible and...

Moving your Parallels virtual machine to another...
Filed under: Software, How-tos, Tips and tricks, AppleRecently, I decided it was time to do a clean install of OSX on my current primary home Mac — a 20” Intel Core Duo iMac named Phoenix. Ordinarily, when I first get a new Mac, I usually wipe it completely and start over with a fresh install, putting in only the things I want — but for some reason never did that with this one....

Hour-Long Spielberg Documentary
Including the charmingly unlikely genesis story of how Spielberg got his first gig at the Universal lot, simply by stepping off the tour bus as well as glimpses of Amblin’ and Fighter Squadron as well as lots of other great nuggest of gold. Warning though, if you, like me, burst into tears at the first sight of E.T., keep the Kleenex’s handy.

Web Domains: Tools To Use, Articles To Read
A thought-out domain name can save you a lot of time and bring you a lot of traffic. Search engines love topic-related domain names and they seem to be an important aspect which is being used to evaluate web-pages. Besides, if you have a popular web-site with enviable reputation, you might be willing to make sure that your visitors don’t get to some surprising web-sites mistyping your site’s...

Review: Dell 30-inch LCD Display
Last week I wrote about my first impressions of the new Santa Rosa Apple MacBook Pro, which I purchased after selling my 24-inch iMac. Since the MacBook Pro is now my main machine I had to spice it up with a larger external LCD. I bought myself an early birthday present, the Dell 3007WFPHC display. Why Dell and not Apple? This particular Dell display holds many, many advantages over the...

A Simple Playlist for Tranquil Exercise,...
Every Wedneday is Simplicity Day on Zen Habits. There are times when I want to crank up the metal and get myself pumped up. But many times, I find that playing some mellow tunes helps me focus, calm myself, and enjoy life much more. Your mileage may vary, but I would recommend some simple tunes if you’d like to enjoy your exercise (a quiet sunrise or sunset run is wonderful), or be productive,...

Working Four Hours A Week
Wouldn’t it be nice to work just four hours a week and then have the rest of the time to do whatever you want? Well Timothy Ferriss thinks it’s possible and he’s got a best selling book that explains how to do just that. Tim was nice enough to send me an advance reviewer’s copy of his book before it went to press. I was suppose to get the review out before the book hit the stores but I never got...

The Easiest Way To…
Copywriting is a part of creating a web page that seems even to be neglected by many of the the oh-so-2.0 type sites and services of the new millennium. How hard can it be to come up with a short string of original prose? Too hard, it would seem. I’ve done a quick Google search, uncovering the sheer extent and overuse of a certain cliché. There really seems to be a surprisingly large number...

I am planning to construct a one day workshop for young photographers. This workshop, will take place on a small tropical island in the West Indies sometime in July, and will feature myself as a guest speaker. The cost for attendance is free, but you must be shorter than 4 feet to attend. On my island in the West Indies, there is a really tiny school for the children of students who attend the...

Kiss the Chisel GoodBye: A 3D printer for wood
The Craftsman CompuCarve combines a little Bill Gates and a little Bob Vila. The etcher can carve complicated patterns into wood up to 5 inches high and 14 1/2 inches long. It maybe out of reach for the budding craftsman at $1,899 a pop but for that price you get all the software and cables you need to make all your shop mates jealous. How To: Rapidly Restart Mac Firefox
I am not going to lie, Firefox for OS X is horrible reliability-wise. It crashes all the time, uses exorbitant amounts of physical and virtual RAM, sometimes won’t let you use the address bar… you get the point. The best fix is to restart Firefox whenever it begins acting sluggish, selfishly uses a lot of your CPU, etcetera. Unfortunately, that seems to happen more often than I’d like. I was...
